WOW! Looks like they were doing the Siege of Ennis - my favourite ceilidh dance! My nan and uncle used to play in a ceilidh band with my nan on the piano and my uncle on the accordian. This was before my time but since my parents danced at ceilidhs and still do given half a chance - not bad for 70 and 71 - its in my blood! No wonder I love dancing!

What a coincidence. Christine and I discussed the Siege of Ennis dance at Jive time Bognor. The first time I did it was at a church hall in a village called Borlan,Tipperary.It was a strange dance event that seemed to get under way at midnight. The hall was filled with my cousins and their wives and the odd nun or two who also turned out to be distant cousins.The occasion was the 'All Ireland Old time waltz competition' My cousin Paddy informed me that the winning couple was likely to be from Borlan and winked!Between the heats of the competition there was general freestyle dancing and then everything would stop and the Siege of Ennis would be announced.The whole hall would fill with rows of dancers, including the nuns, and the music would start and the lines advanced in a frighteningly rapid , galloping pace, and then became more terrifying as the front rank turned and started to weave its way back through the advancing masses and then the second rank etc. The sight of a nun in her habit coming at you, cousin or not was scary! Then all of a sudden it stopped as suddenly as it started and the waltzing couples were off again.
