Smokefree England

Ok, so it's not a dance topic, and probably contraversial amongst smokers but I for one am sooooooo pleased that England is going Smoke Free on July 1st.

I'm probably the most anti-smoking person I know and always have been. I threatened to leave home at 9 years old if my parents didn't give up smoking. They gave up when I was 12 :-)

Although the last few years have been really good in pubs/restaurants, there's still places that we can't go because I refuse to be sitting in a smoky environment. I don't dislike smokers, just the habit itself and all the smokers I know are actually ok with the ban, some of them are going to give up.

Anyone else have any strong opinions on this?

I have always been keen on live music- mainly folk and celtic bands. Gigs in pubs are the most exciting because you are close up to the performers and the intimate atmosphere is all part of the pleasure. However these venues are almost always polluted by smoking. (The performers are often the worst offenders!) Our trip to Dublin last year was made even better by the fact that the no-smoking rule already exists there. We saw some really exciting bands in pubs that weekend. We had to run the gauntlet of the smokers standing outside the pub entrances though!
Although I have moved on and prefer dancing to the passivity of watching a band nowadays, I still like live music. It will be nice to fully enjoy Broadstairs Folk Week this year.
Some smokers say that this is an infringement of their liberty.Well the number of times my wife and I have had to leave pubs because of the severe breathing difficulty brought on by other peoples fags is an infringement of our freedom of choice. I welcome the new rules and look forward to enjoying pub entertainment and food again!

I beg to differ with you Nicky - I am the world's most anti-smoking person! I used to have no skin on my face due to eczema caused mainly (I am told) by smoke! I can't wait for the ban but do wonder if I will be required to breath in more on the streets and also will it increase the litter as a lot of people who wouldn't usually drop litter seem to not think of fag ends as litter and just drop them wherever they are.

Hi anonymous :-)

Not sure who you are, but I can understand your problem with smoking and I sympathise with you. I agree about having to walk through doorways of smoke is not great either as it still gets in your hair and clothes etc, but I still think it's a positive step for us non-smokers in enclosed spaces.

None of my family nor I have ever smoked, but I went out with a "considerate" smoker for 5 years so I can see both sides of the argument. I believe it should be banned from places where food is served. But my biggest whinge is against those smokers who walk along with the cigarette pointing away from the bodies so as to burn the clothes of those around them me thinks! But I have come up with a cunning plan ... a swinging carrier bag so well timed that I have knocked a good few out of their hands! Watch out smoking commuters!

Good luck to all those who are going to give up smoking (I hear two fingerered kitkats help!) and prepare to wrap up warm and prepare to hang around on street corners those who still wish to smoke!

Both my parents died of lung cancer and my brother, who lived with them a lot longer than I did, has heart bypasses and has now developed a cancer himself pos down to 'passive' intake! However, if someone wants to take ten to twenty years off their life by using their little cancer sticks that is their decision just so long as they dont come near me! Dave
